Attorney: Quakertown Community HS Senior Drops Lawsuit Against PIAA

Posted: Updated:
QUAKERTOWN, Pa. -

A boy who was suing over a brand new state rule, which got him kicked off a local high school varsity field hockey team, has dropped his case.

FOX 29 has been following the story at Quakertown Community High School for weeks.

FOX 29's Chris O'Connell has the latest.

A high school field hockey game normally wouldn't get this much attention, but today is different. The game is getting attention because of who is not on the field, specially a Quakertown senior player who happens to be a boy, playing on the girl's field hockey team.

That boy has since quit the team in addition to the entire Quakertown coaching staff.

Joshua Schwarz has been playing field hockey since 7th grade; however, as of 2 weeks ago he's not allowed to play on the varsity team. The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association banned males from playing female sports in the post season. In essence, if he played, his team wouldn't go to the playoffs.

He threatened a lawsuit against the PIAA, but on Wednesday, his attorney announced the high school senior will not pursue the lawsuit. He has quit the team, according to his mother. Less than 24 hours ago, three coaches have stepped down from the team as well with no reason given.

"It put our district and a lot of other districts in a quandary. The girls had the opportunity to reach the playoffs,” said Quakertown Superintendent Dr. William Harner.

Josh's mother says the boy thought the negative media attention was just getting too to be too much of a distraction for his teammates.
