Arrest in Meriwether Co. murder case

MERIWETHER COUNTY, Ga. -

Investigators say a surveillance photo helped lead to the arrest of a person of interest in the murder of a 62-year-old Meriwether County man.

It was a shopping trip to Walmart that led Meriwether County authorities to the arrest of 25-year old Christopher Barner, of Newnan. The photo shows Barner shortly after 62-year-old Tommy Ogletree's murder.

The victim's Lexus was missing after the murder. The sheriff says his investigators and the GBI can allegedly tie Barner to the Lexus at a Walmart in Newnan after the murder.

"He is currently in the Meriwether County jail charged with theft by taking," said Smith.

Deputies found Ogletree's body Friday evening at his home located on Callaway road. He had been shot once and had been dead for several days, according to Smith.

Sheriff Smith also says Ogletree lived alone and was extremely cautious of country life. Two miles from Greenville and in rural Meriwether County, Ogletree had bars on his windows and doors as well a lock on the property's outer gate.

"So to get inside the home you would have to be a close personal friend or a relative," said Smith.

That Walmart surveillance photo also shows a 16-year-old-girl. Smith says she has not been charged and remains a person of interest, along with Barner, in the murder of Ogletree.

Atlanta Police found Ogletree's stolen car abandoned last Friday night. The sheriff says evidence from the car led them to that Walmart in Newnan and then led them to the surveillance photos of Barner and the 16-year-old, as well as the car.
