Some residents frustrated as Detroit water shutoffs resume

Posted: Updated:
CITY OF DETROIT - Darius Brooks was one of the first Detroit residents to have his water shutoff Tuesday morning - even though he claims to have paid 10 percent of his $326 bill that is months late.

"I just don't appreciate the fact that you tell me if I come and do what I'm suppose to do and stand in your line," he said. "That I'm going to be taken care of."

"He (was) telling me that I'm not on the books. I'm like that is crazy."

The water department is back on the offensive after enrolling 25,000 people into payment plans during its shutoff moratorium.

Curtrise Garner of the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department said the city is willing to work with people dealing with water bill issues.

"If you are having an affordability problem, then the department is going to work with you," she said. "I think shown that we've shown that with several customers."

In addition to shutting off service to about 400 customers Tuesday, crews  are also turning water back on for customers who have paid their debts in full or have promised to do so.
