NORTHEAST PHILADELPHIA-  Police say 25-year-old James Mears has been charged with two counts murder, two counts of robbery and other related charges in connection with the double murder on Vista Street that happened Saturday.

FOX 29's Lauren Johnson reports.

According to investigators, Mears lived at the house with victims for past 2 months.

Police say 67-year-old Dollie Evans was found shot in the head on the first floor and 57-year-old Ruby April Thomas was shot multiple times, including once in the head on the second floor of the house in the 4700 block of Vista Street.

Police say Mears confessed to planning a robbery scheme. According to police, Mears knew Evan had money.

“She put up a slight struggle, he pulled out a gun, he fired one time,” said Philadelphia Homicide Captain James Clark.

Authorities say Mears took $500 before heading upstairs where the only witness was.

“He started strangling her, then he pulled out the gun, and shot her several times,” said Clark.

Witnesses told police they saw Mears running from the home. Many residents did not knew him by name, but recognized him because he lived with the two victims.

“Just weak, just weak,” said the victim's brother Joey Thomas

Words are hard to come by for Thomas as he watches a memorial grow outside of his sister's home. Thomas says he will let his sister rest in peace while searching for his own peace in this senseless crime.

The murder also came as a shock to the community. Many residents said the two women were known in the neighborhood for taking people in who were down on their luck.
