Service centers packed as Detroit water shutoff deadline looms

Posted: Updated:
CITY OF DETROIT -

(UPDATE): Those who were not helped Monday were given vouchers to return to work out a service plan with an extended deadline of Thursday.

Armed with umbrellas, residents stood and sat outside a Detroit Water and Sewerage service center on Grand River to secure their water service before the shut offs resume Tuesday. It's one of three centers that saw lines.

The line is long. The wait exhausting and the stories, heartbreaking. Denne Jones is one of hundreds you will hear, if you take the time to listen.

"I couldn't imagine having my water shut off," Jones said. "Its a crying situation but you got to make a sacrifice."

Jones recently lost her job. Others are on disability or are making tough choices because of a fixed income. The water worries are obvious.

"I've been out here since 10 in the sun about to burn up," said Sylvester DeLoach. "The line is barely moving you got to do so what you got to do."

"These great people are coming out getting a payment plan, paying their bills," said Curtis Garner of the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department. "They will have water that's a wonderful thing.".
