Homicide investigators say it was just after 10 p.m. Thursday night when a man spotted someone near his pickup truck on his home surveillance cameras and went downstairs to investigate.
While someone was breaking into his vehicle, he shot the male.
The unarmed, 30-year-old South Jersey man, who police would not identify at this time, was shot twice, once in the back of the head and once in the back. The homeowner remained at the scene, with his gun until police arrived.
"He does state that during the course of opening the garage door, that's when the confrontation ensues between himself and the male," said Lt. Norman Davenport of the Homicide Unit.
Homicide detectives retrieved surveillance video from the scene and took the homeowner in for questioning, no charges have been filed.
Police say more investigation is needed before the District Attorney can decided whether to charge the 56-year-old shooter.
"The shooting did occur within the immediate area of his property and that's why more facts have to be gathered," said Lt. Davenport.
"Just a hard working guy, doesn't bother anybody. Nobody bothers anybody back here. We just go about our business, do our jobs, try to run businesses," said a neighbor.
Tom Lorimer owns the building just down the alley from the shooting scene. He says the biggest concerns here are illegal trash dumping and prostitution. He could understand why his neighbor may have felt threatened enough to shoot.
"If they're breaking into his property, I don't see why he couldn't defend himself, I think he should be allowed to defend himself. That's the way it is. What else can you do, shoot or be shot," said Lorimer.
State police say one trooper is dead and another is injured after a shooting at a state police barracks in northeastern Pennsylvania.
