Cobb County airport to build customs facility

Posted: Updated:

KENNESAW, Ga. (AP) - Cobb County officials say upgrades to an airport in Kennesaw are expected to help the facility begin receiving international flights.

The Marietta Daily Journal reports the Cobb County Board of Commissioners voted to approve a construction contract to build a new customs inspection area at Cobb County Airport-McCollum Field in Kennesaw.

Airport manager Karl Von Hagel says aircraft can depart the facility for international destinations, but international flights must go through another airport with a customs facility before coming to Cobb County.

County Commission Chairman Tim Lee says the customs facility and other upgrades are expected to make the airport more attractive for companies doing international business.

Von Hagel says construction on the 29,000-square foot, $800,000 facility is expected to begin in September and should be done by April.
