Special Judge Appointed In McDaniel Election Challenge
JONES COUNTY, Miss. (FOX13) -
On Friday the Mississippi Supreme Court appointed a special judge, retired chancery judge Senior Status Judge Hollis McGehee, to preside over the election matter of State Sen. Chris McDaniel vs. U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran.
Tea Party-backed Sen. McDaniel asked the State Supreme Court on Thursday to declare him the winner of the June 24 Republican runoff against Sen. Cochran or order a new election.
Sen. McDaniel sued Thursday in state court in his own home of Jones Count. He faces high hurdles to convince a judge to take either action: it would be unprecedented for a court to order a do-over of a statewide election, and part of his argument in the lawsuit hinges on an unenforceable law.
