NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Authorities on Friday recovered a kayak while searching for a kayaker who went missing in Lake Ronkonkoma on Long Island since Thursday afternoon.

Suffolk County Police said witnesses called 911 after they saw a distressed kayaker in the lake off Lake Shore Drive at about 3:30 p.m. Thursday. They said the man was calling for help, but the good Samaritans lost sight of him.

Authorities, including marine and aviation units, searched for the man for several hours Thursday and Friday. They plan to keep looking on Saturday.

Police closed the 23-acre lake to swimmers and boaters on Friday. Several people have drowned in the lake over the years.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation said parts of the lake are 65 feet deep. But most of it is less than 15 feet deep.
