Woman shot by Phoenix police dies

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Phoenix Police say a woman has died after being shot by officers responding to a mental health call.

Officers responded after 2 p.m. Thursday to an apartment near 51st Ave. & Indian School.

They were going to execute a mental health pickup order for Michelle Cusseaux. The order was issued after Cusseaux threatened to shoot members of the staff at a mental health facility with a gun. Officers believed she had a gun in her apartment.

Three officers arrived and tried to get the woman out of her apartment. She was on the threshold of the apartment and refused to come out for authorities, slamming the door and returning inside. Officers managed to make entry through the security door on the apartment but as they did she quickly opened the front door and raised a claw hammer, advancing on officers.

A 19 year veteran of the department opened fire once striking Cusseaux. She was rushed to the hospital where she died from her injuries.

The sergeant who fired will be placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure following officer involved shootings.
