Taney Dragons Prepare To Take The Field At LLWS

Posted: Updated:

Willamsport, Pa.-Opening ceremonies for the 75th Little League World Series took place on Thursday. And for the first time ever, a team from Philadelphia was represented.

FOX 29's Chris O'Connell was on hand for the opening festivities.

For 12 boys and 1 girl, you can officially say their dreams have come true. The Taney Dragons, which are now known as the Mid-Atlantic team, got their first taste of the Little League World Series.

Last night, it was a parade and a picnic. Today, opening ceremonies were held, but now, it's time for these young men and women to get down to business.

The group of kids from all over city are sharing the international stage with 15 other teams from around the country and around the world. Even Hall of Famer Dave Winfield threw out the first pitch..

The road to Williamsport has been months in the making. Endless hours of shuttling kids to practice, early mornings at the batting cage, and nail biting playoffs. For parents this is the payoff, a chance for their kids to play in the big time.

"Act like a professional athlete for a week, and get all this stuff and play on that beautiful field. I mean I can't imagine getting this opportunity,” said father, Brian Simon.

Joe Richardson says his son and teammates are having the time of their life.

It's the parents who are stressed. He could barely watch batting practice. And get this he doesn't even watch the games.

“I learned not to because it can be really, really stressful. I still have to drive home,” said father, Joe Richardson.

Being just 177 miles away from Philadelphia, they are considered the home team. And with it comes a lot of media attention, especially for pitcher Mo'Ne Davis who clearly has become the media darling of Williamsport.

The Taney Dragon's first game is on Friday at 3 p.m. against the Southeast Regional team from Nashville.
