Nonprofit offers free drug tests for kids

Posted: Updated:
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Kids are back in school and a local nonprofit is helping parents keep them on the right track.

The organization is handing out free at home drug tests and says the program is about more than catching your kid doing drugs.

“We've been lucky enough not to need the next step but it's good to know,” said Gilbert Castillo who was there to pick up drug tests for his kids.

The Scottsdale based organization notMYkid kicked off its back to school substance abuse prevention campaign August 13.

“Then you have you have your child urinate into the cup up to the line,” explained Jansen Neff the organization's event manager, “after five minutes you should have results.”

The nonprofit is handing out more than 4,000 at home drug tests in the valley and across the country.

It says it's not just about catching kids in the act.

“There's a deterrent but it also provides them an out; so when their peers ask them to use drugs they can deflect the pressure on their parents and say ‘it's not a matter of me not being cool enough, my parents will drug test, me they're crazy,” said notMYkid's communication manager Shane Watson.

The organization reminds parents the first step is talk to your kids and those who have used the program say it works.

“Our approach has always been to just reflect that and again give them in excuse that, hey this is what it's like at my home and for me to be successful these are the things that I need to comply with,” said Castillo.

The organization says it's also important to stay active in your kids' lives.

Not my kid will hold several events throughout the week.
