South Mountain Park damaged during storm

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (KSAZ) - South Mountain was soaked in the latest round of storms to pound the valley.

Heavy rains caused landslides on several roadways and trails leading to the top of the mountain.

The City of Phoenix has closed the Central Avenue entrance to the park while crews survey the damage and begin cleanup.

David Urbinato with the City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department said the damage was unlike what many rangers had witnessed in the past.

A landslide at the 2 mile mark covered the road with at least 6 feet of mud and several boulders.

Six people who were at the top of the mountain during the storm were trapped by the slide, Phoenix Fire Department crews rescued them after 9 p.m. Tuesday evening.

Other entrances and facilities at the park are remaining open while crews work on the Central Ave. roadway.
