MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

A Minneapolis man became trapped in a sand pile outside of his house near Lake Nokomis while digging near the foundation Wednesday morning. The incident was reported around 10:30 a.m. at the house near E. 54th Street and Shoreview Avenue.

A technical rescue crew arrived and helped the man get out of the 8-foot hole in about 9 minutes. He had been trapped up to his waist in sand and was having trouble breathing, but was eventually able to climb out on his own once the hole was reinforced.

“As a matter of fact, they came from a training scene,” Deputy Fire Chief Mike Dickenson said of the rescue team. “They were doing training for a confined space.”

Three Minneapolis fire crews responded to the incident, with help from St. Paul firefighters and a city of Minneapolis vacuum truck.
