NORTH CHICAGO, Ill. (Associated Press) - The makers of Jelly Belly candy say they're reducing their workforce at the company's North Chicago factory and will no longer make their famous jelly beans there.

Fairfield, California-based Jelly Belly Candy Company says a smaller number of North Chicago employees will continue to make private label and contract candies. The famous, multi-flavored jelly beans will be made at Jelly Belly's California headquarters.

About 66 jobs will be eliminated. Company president Bob Simpson says it was a difficult decision. In a statement, he calls private label manufacturing "a forward thinking step for the best deployment of the Illinois facility and the company overall."

Jelly Belly was formerly known in North Chicago as Goelitz Confectionery Company. The company has been making candy at the Illinois plant for more than 100 years.
