AMS president speaks about Tony Stewart crash

Posted: Updated:

Police say NASCAR champion Tony Stewart was behind the wheel when his car struck and hit driver Kevin Ward Jr., killing him over the weekend.

Stewart has not been charged and police say their investigation is not criminal.

The President of Atlanta Motor Speedway has known Stewart for more than 20 years.

“It's just a sad day,” said Atlanta Motor Speedway President Ed Clark. “It's the downside of our sport. It's dangerous.”

Clark says Stewart is a great guy with a huge heart and does a lot for charity.

Clark tells FOX 5's Denise Dillon there's no way any driver would intentionally hit someone.

Stewart is scheduled to race at Atlanta Motor Speedway Labor Day weekend. Clark is confident he'll be there and his fans will be there to support him.

“Once he's had time to be himself and digest this, the best medicine for him will be to get back to his family and friends at the racetrack,” said Clark.
