(WJBK) - Two people are dead and a third person is in custody after a boat crash on Lake St. Clair.

Two boats collided on the south channel near Harsens Island just before 7 p.m. Sunday.

The St. Clair County Sheriff says Robert Koontz, 57, of Chesterfield Township and Nancy Axford, 68, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada were killed in the crash.

The sheriff says the crash occurred with a 25-foot Baja boat and a cabin cruiser. The Baja boat, driven by a 32-year-old Chesterfield Township, man struck the cabin cruiser broadside. The Baja ended up riding up and over the other boat, causing one passenger on the cabin cruiser to be thrown in the water.

Three others aboard the cabin cruiser were hurt. Both Koontz and Axford were passengers aboard the cabin cruiser.

The sheriff says the driver of the Baja boat was arrested and is facing alcohol-related charges.

UPDATE August 5: The driver has been released from custody pending toxicology test results. Click here to read more.

The crash remains under investigation.
