Detroit Police's 'Green Machine 40' stages crackdown of suspected drug houses

Posted: Updated:
CITY OF DETROIT -  Heavily armed members of the Detroit Police Special Response Team move in -- swarming this house on Tacoma with the state police helicopter overhead.

This residence is believed to be a drug house where people were selling cocaine. No evidence and no arrests were found this time, but Detroit Police Chief James Craig says the message is loud and clear

"We'll come back to this location and we'll send the owner a nice note and if we have to come back again we'll take it," said Craig.

Elsewhere there were arrests -- Fox 2 saw officers confiscate guns and drugs and tow away vehicles.

A stripped, stolen car was found in one garage and neighbors say they're glad to see the crackdown.

"A lot of guns and drugs and shooting -- I'm glad to see the police here," said one resident.

"I think they'll get the message, I really do," said one man who said he used to be a criminal who served jail time for drugs until he turned his life around.

That's what Craig urged some young people to do -- as they were arrested in a drug house near City Airport.

"The message is stop -- stop what you're doing,  this neighborhood does not belong to you," Craig said.

The operation dubbed Green Machine 40 after the Craig's 40th reunion at Cass Tech High School is part of an ongoing effort to root out crime. the chief calls these raids neighborhood parties -- but they're no party for the people hauled away in handcuffs.

Police found a sawed off shotgun, a handgun, and two drums for an AK-47 inside this house on Christie Street and also narcotics paraphernalia and a letter to a known gang member. It's believed his mother stays here.

"We're taking neighborhoods back sometimes a block at a time," Craig said.

Craig said the Ninth Precinct was targeted this time because there's been a 42 percent increase in robberies here. but he says overall crime is down in Detroit and efforts like this are making a difference.
