Arizonans to begin receiving early ballots

Posted: Updated:

Early voting ballots for the August primary were mailed out July 31.

The Secretary of State's office began the process of sending out the ballots to more than one-million voters.

Officials say in Maricopa County alone they've seen an increase in the number of people looking to cast their vote by-mail.

The number of independents who've already picked which ballot they want has set a record.

"Over 55,000 have indicated which ballot they want, which isn't a lot, but it is a record. Two years ago we only had 21,000 or so get their early ballots, so this is more than double," said Linda Weedon the Deputy Director of elections for Maricopa County.

If you want to vote from the comfort of your own home the deadline to request one of the by-mail ballots is August 15 and you'll have until August 22 to mail it back.

Voters registered as independents can vote in the primary election. The general election will be held Nov. 4.

The candidates for governor in the Republican race are Ken Bennett, Doug Ducey, Christine Jones, Frank Riggs, Scott Smith and Andrew Thomas. The Democrat running for governor is Fred DuVal.
