DEARBORN, Mich. (WJBK) - A Dearborn woman is dead and her own brother is behind bars charged with her murder.

What happened in the 7500  block of Bingham Street Saturday still has neighbors wondering, 'Why.'

"I wept. I cried. I thought it was horrible," says neighbor Virginia Leonard.

A brother allegedly strangled his own sister, stabbed her several times and eventually killed her.

"I'm sure it's a very horrible thing for that family," said Virginia Leonard, neighbor. "Not only did those parents lose a daughter, they lost basically a son too, and it's affected everyone I'm sure. Very sad."

On Monday, a judge arraigned 23-year-old Haron Elmawri on first-degree premeditated murder and torture charges for the incident that happened at the family home.

Elmawri once shared that home with his 30-year-old sister Eye-sa and another brother.

"In retrospect we've determined that there might be some mental fitness questions [involving] some prior history of assault," Police Chief Ronald Haddad said. "Unfortunately it escalated into a homicide."

Some neighbors who spoke to Fox 2's Robin Murdoch off camera say they never had any problems with Elmawri, while others say he always seemed a bit off to them.

The courtroom had extra security as a precaution and although he seemed visibly agitated at times, the back up remained in the background.

"The sad part is that many times you get an opportunity to quell these kind of situations and they don't make the news," Haddad said. "However, in this case that was not possible and it's tragic for the entire community."

The judge set Elmawri's bond at $1 million after investigators told the court they were concerned for the suspect's well being and the community's. Elmawri's next court date is set for August 8th.
