PHOENIX (KSAZ) - An American Legion post in Northwest Phoenix could shut its doors this week because it cannot pay the rent.

Post-105 fell behind and so far hasn't been able to keep up. It has veterans upset and worried.

The post is located near 35th Drive & Thunderbird Road. The post has been here for twenty years and at that location for the past 15 years.

But it's in a situation where it needs money to stay open.

Plenty of smiles and good fellowship at the bar, but anxiety is in the air at the American Legion Post-105 in Northwest Phoenix.

The rent is overdue, and the landlord is about to kick them out.

"This post right now is in dire need of $23,000," said John Simo. FOX 10 asked when the money was needed by, he replied "yesterday."

The post actually has a few more days, but maybe only until Thursday to come up with the rent. Dwindling membership, not raising money, and poor financial practices have led to the current situation.

It's a big challenge for the brand-new post commander, who says the legion makes a big difference in veteran's lives.

"It has been very good to me; I came in here five years ago, and they helped me through difficult times, and they help vets with PTSD, and those sleeping on the streets. We raise money for them," said Simo.

So the post is getting the word out, they need help, and right away.

"I would ask all the vets, even though you are not a member stop in, help out, join us if you're not a member here," said Paul Nemence.

FOX 10 reached out the landlord and left a message with staff, and they have not called back. The post asks anyone who wants o help to stop by as soon as possible.
