SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. - Numerous residents in a San Clemente community claimed mysterious dolls had been placed on their doorsteps.

They weren't sure if it was just an act of child's-play, if it meant something more.

Over the last week, the dolls had shown up at least eight homes.

Those families grew increasingly concerned because they say the dolls left on their porches closely resembled their daughters.

Officials collected the dolls as evidence and began an investigation.

The mystery was solved on Thursday.

According to the Orange County Sheriff's Department, it was a woman who attends church with many of the families who gave away the dolls.

Investigators say she admitted to placing the dolls at various houses, but her motivation was out of good will and intended it as a kind gesture.

According to FOX 11 in Los Angeles, the families all go to the same church and one of the parishioners, a woman, had a lot of dolls she wanted to get rid of. She matched up the dolls with kids who went to her church and left them on the porches as a Santa-like surprise.

They won't be investigating any further into the case.
