Neighbors Recount Encounters With Wellness Center Shooting Suspect

DARBY, Pa. -

FOX 29 is learning more about the suspect, 49-year-old Richard Plotts.

He is currently in critical condition at Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

According to court documents, Plotts has convictions in both Delaware and Philadelphia counties dating back more than 20 years.

Some of his former neighbors say they’ve had strange encounters with him in the past.

“You could tell that he was strange, you could tell that he needed help," Cathy Nickel said.

Bizarre, erratic and frightening; that's how former neighbors described accused Wellness Center shooter Richard Plotts.

“He knocked on my door one day to ask for my cell phone because he stabbed himself in the leg, so that sort of like turned on the light to me," Bert Garcia said.

Neighbors said he lived at this Upper Darby apartment within the last year.

Cathy Nickel said Plotts screamed what now comes off as an eerie message when he moved out.

“The last thing he said getting in the van, he hollered, ‘you haven’t heard the end of me yet'" Nickel said.

Court documents show Plotts received probation in the early 90s for two convictions for illegal possession of a firearm and bringing a firearm to a public place.

Court records also show he served jail time after being found guilty of simple assault in 1992.

Neighbors said Plotts never threatened violence and typically kept to himself.

“Walking up and down the halls talking to himself and just acting crazy like flailing his hands and yelling and you’d open the door and thought he was yelling and someone but he was just yelling at the wall," Nickel said.

Neighbors said they tried to leave him alone.

“Once he knocked on my door asking for a phone, I just kept my distance because he was a big guy and could have been intimidating," Garcia said.

Neighbors also said that a case worker helped move Plotts from his Upper Darby apartment and that they appeared to get along fine.

It's unclear if that's the same case worker killed at the Wellness Center.
