YORKVILLE, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A Vietnam War veteran from southwest suburban Yorkville had another reason to celebrate Independence Day this year — with a $250,000 lottery win.

Richard Carlson, a retired construction worker and Vietnam War combat veteran, bought his winning $1 Lucky Day Lotto ticket at Express Lane at 109 State Route 47 in Sugar Grove, according to a statement from Illinois Lottery. Carlson matched all five numbers — 11 – 13 – 28 – 32 – 35 — in the July 4 midday drawing.

“After I realized I won a quarter of a million dollars, I signed the back of my ticket and put it in a little plastic baggie until I could claim my prize,” Carlson said in the statement. “I was so worried something might happen to it.”

Carlson plans to buy a condo in Florida and invest his winnings, the statement said.

The retailer will receive a $2,500 bonus — 1 percent of the prize amount — for selling the winning ticket.
