Man busted attempting to take up-skirt photo on CTA train

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A Chicago woman said she caught a man on the Red Line Tuesday trying to take an up-skirt photo of her.

“Maybe Chicago should beef up security that's the only thing I can think of, it just needs to be personnel on the train who can protect the people,” said Chicago Transit Authority rider Shaquila Moore.

That was Moore’s reaction after FOX 32’s Tisha Lewis told her about Tuesday night's up-skirt incident on the Red Line.

The victim blogged about the scare on Reddit. She said she spotted the guy dangling a bag under her skirt with a camera inside. She said she tackled him and others stepped in to hold him down until the cops got there.

The suspect was arrested and charged with unauthorized video-taping through clothes.

Alderman Ed Burke wrote the ordinance banning up-skirt photos and videos in Chicago. He said that this kind of stuff happens more than you may know.

“I'm pleased that the police took prompt action on the complaint of this woman who was victimized by this pervert,” said Burke in an interview with FOX 32’s Tisha Lewis.

The victim also pointed out that while people did step in to help, she was disappointed that more didn't respond to her cries.

One Reddit user commented saying, “People are more likely to respond and take action when they are specifically instructed to,” and urged victims to yell, “Call 9-1-1.”

“I understand that you can go on YouTube and pull up sites where people engage in this practice and put it out there for the world to see,” said Burke.

“This is an example that there are a lot of perverts roaming around who engage in this offensive conduct and we ought to have laws that stop them,” Burke added.

The suspected up-skirt incident follows last week's armed robbery on the Orange Line.

The suspects are still on the run despite their pictures being plastered all over television.

College student Annie Sullivan has a good plan.

“There's usually another guy with me, that's a way to get other creepy guys off my back so that's what I usually do,” said Sullivan.

Despite two incidents in a few weeks, the Chicago Transit Authority insists riders are safe.

FOX 32’s Tisha Lewis reported there are more than 23,000 CTA surveillance cameras across the city. The CTA said they are on and recording.

However, many are not monitored. The CTA hopes, though, that they serve as a deterrent to crime and aid in investigations.

As for last week's armed robbery on a CTA train and this week's up-skirt incident, the CTA said that is not the norm and tells FOX 32 News that robberies on CTA trains are down by nearly 40 percent compared to this time last year.
