Valley man honored for helping Glendale Police catch suspect

PHOENIX (KSAZ) - A young valley man was honored by the Glendale Police Department. He risked his life to help detain a man who was trying to get away from police.

They said if this guy hadn't stopped to help, the suspect would have gotten away. The police gave him an award Tuesday.

Dashcam video showed the take down, 25-year-old Reginald Lee catching a wanted suspect running from officers. The officers quickly rushed over to help.

"I decided to take action, I thought that was the right thing to do," said Lee.

Lee was on his way to work when he saw 34-year-old Albert Vasquez running away from Glendale Police, running into traffic and across busy streets.

"Something just triggered I need to help, I need to help right away before this guy can go out and hurt a little kid or anybody else in the community," he said.

Glendale Police were first called after they say Vasquez forced his way into an apartment and refused to leave. When officers got there, he threatened them with a screwdriver and then ran away. He kept on running until Lee stepped in.

"Risked his own safety to help our officers to take that suspect into custody," said Assistant Chief Greg Dominguez.

"Officer Bradley Jones died years back, and he was a good family friend of mine, I didn't want to see anything like that happen again," said Lee.

Police say Vasquez continued to struggle with them; he was tased and arrested.

"Often we deal as police officers with the worst of our community, we look at the small percentage of our community that is committing crimes, this is the good side of our community," said Dominguez.

When Lee pulled over to catch the suspect, he hit his tire against the curb and damaged it. Police worked with Discount Tire and gave Lee a $100 gift certificate.
