Local rescue crews reminding of the dangers of drowning

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - While the hot temperatures have lots of metro Detroiters flocking to the water to cool off, local rescue crews are reminding everyone about the dangers of drowning.

"In my 23-year career, I don't remember having four drownings this quick in the county. I don't remember having four drownings in one summer," says Shelby Twp. Fire Chief Jim Swinkowski.

Swinkowski's crews have dealt with two incidents here at Stony Creek Metropark alone in recent weeks. He's speaking out in hopes the drownings will stop.

"Use the water for what it's intended for. If you're in a river, it's a moving body of water, you should always be wearing a life jacket canoeing, kayaking. If you want to swim, go to a designated beach," Swinkowski says.

Federal numbers show roughly 10 people drown every day in the United States. Statistics also show 37 percent of all adult Americans can't swim the length of a pool.

Emergency crews obviously go through extensive training for water rescues, but sometimes all the training in the world just isn't enough. Common sense is key, along with never taking the water for granted.
