Family upset about rainy, leaky ceiling in Canton apartment

Posted: Updated:
Canton, Mich. (WJBK) - The family living in this apartment complex says when it rains it pours, literally into their living room.

Documenting the nightmare in their Crossings at Canton town home, Raymond Ficklin and Latondee Wright watch sewer water pouring into their living room.

"It was horrible," Wright said. "When I called to ask what they were going to do about it they told me you can go to a room but you've got to pay for it out of your pocket."

They reported a leak in their bathroom to the complex nearly two weeks ago, and now this family of six stares at a patched up ceiling which they say is just concealing the problem.

"It came from the pipes, and nothing has been done to the pipes, so it's going to happen again," Wright said.

They added that every time it rains, their home leaks. Their upstairs bathroom has a broken pipe which they say makes the bathroom floor so soggy that Ficklin is worried that "one of my kids is going to fall through the floor."

Crossings at Canton management told Fox 2 they did fix the problem, an overflowing toilet, and spent nearly two weeks patching up the ceiling and drying out the carpet and walls. They also offered a courtesy $100 off rent which this family calls a joke.

"Like that's doing me a favor or something," Wright said. "The rent is $1,100 here."

"We have four kids we have to take care of and we're not getting help," Ficklin said.

Wright said that she feels "powerless" and that she's in a bad situation that she can't do anything about.

Crossings at Canton management still insists that the work order was put in as an overflowing toilet, but will send someone out as soon as possible.
