Young Girls Battling Illness Wish For Becoming Doctor Granted

Posted: Updated:

INDIANAPOLIS – It’s not the happiest place on earth, but for the young “Dr. Cindy” a hospital room was where her dreams came true.

“My first thought was does she really understand that she could go to Disney World, go to Atlanta. She could do things that at that age are a lot more amazing,” said Dr. Rhonda Hamaker.

Lavish dreams and princess fairy tales were at Cindy’s fingertips through the Make a Wish Foundation. She decided against that and said she wanted to become a doctor for a day.

The Logansport, Ind., Wish Kid was inspired by the doctors who treated her over the years. Cindy suffers from a life-threatening respiratory condition. For a while, she wasn’t able to eat and breathe on her own. With a better health report she wanted to show her appreciation for the ear, nose and throat specialist at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at St. Vincent.

“It makes me think there’s hope that there’s going to be altruistic doctors in the future who really want to take care of people and take care of kids,” said Hamaker.

Hamaker wanted the experience to be real as possible, so they used peanut butter and raisins as ear wax. Dr. Cindy even saw patients and wrote prescriptions, all while in her custom made orange lab jacket.

“It definitely shows the child’s passion and where that passion lies. So when I saw this wish come across my desk I was so, so excited to get started planning because you can tell Cindy is passionate about this and she really wants to make a unique experience for her,” said Make a Wish program manager Suzanne Gardner.

Those at the hospital were glad to witness Dr. Cindy, who was familiar with the room and machines having visited the children’s hospital many times as a child.

“To see her grow up and be a normal child from a really sick infant is wonderful. It’s heartwarming and it makes you feel like, oh all those hours are worth it, that this is going to have a good outcome for somebody,” said Hamaker.
