Lowe's workers fix Vietnam veteran's wheelchair

Posted: Updated:

Some big-hearted home improvement store employees stepped up to the plate to help a disabled war veteran on Staten Island after waiting for two years for the Veterans Administration to help.

Michael Sulsona, who lost both legs in Vietnam, said he has spent two years waiting for a new wheelchair from the Department of Veterans Affairs. Last week, while shopping at a Lowe's in Staten Island, Sulsona's wheelchair broke down.

He and his wife planned on fixing the wheelchair themselves, but three employees jumped into action instead. Without wasting any time, they tore apart the wheelchair in the store and reassembled it.

The Lowe's employees stayed late after their 10 p.m. closing time to do the repair, for free, according to the AP.

"They said, 'You're not leaving till it's like new again,'" Sulsona recalled.

Sulsona has since received his replacement wheelchair from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

"We were very grateful that this was brought to our attention," said VA spokesman Jim Blue with the VA New York/New Jersey Healthcare Network, according to the AP. "Too many veterans wait too long to receive their health care and benefits and this has never been acceptable."

The Lowe's store manager said he couldn't be "more proud of his team or company."

"Whether a customer needs assistance repairing their home or a wheelchair, our employees are ready to spring into action to help," DiMaria said.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
