Why baseball players seem to hit more home runs in the summer

Posted: Updated:
Coors Field in Colorado has a reputation for being a hitters ballpark. That's because being a mile high, the air is considerably less dense.  Derek Kevra explains how this science works, and why it could mean more home runs for the Tigers this summer.

Miguel Cabrera hits a lot of home runs. Most of them are due to the fact that he's one of the best hitters the game's ever seen, but could some of it be due to the weather? It's entirely possible.

In summer months, we often talk about players "heating up". Maybe it's because their muscles feel better in warm weather. Maybe it's because they find a groove at the plate. But maybe there is something simpler than that. Maybe it's the humidity.

It sounds crazy, but humid air is actually lighter than dry air. Humid air has more hydrogen, which is less dense than nitrogen, so when you replace one for the other, the air is lighter.

When the air gets moister (and lighter), things can travel through it easier. There is less resistance or drag.

So, when Miggy hits a bomb on a hot summer day, the ball travels through less resistance and goes farther. The same swing on a cold, dry day in April (or hopefully October) has to fight through denser air and could lose anywhere between 10-15 feet of distance. That's the difference between a home run and a warning track out.

Over the last five years, the three month stretch in which Cabrera has hit the most combined dingers are June, July and August.
