Mayor Duggan asks Wayne Co. Executive candidate to stop using his photo

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) -  The race for Wayne County Executive took a controversial turn. Some believe a mailer sent out to potential voters is misleading and inappropriate.

Decision day is less than 30 days away and candidate Bill Wild is doing a little explaining about his recent mailer. The Westland mayor since 2007 is defending the message behind it - and the picture on it.

It shows he and Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan side by side, and if you didn't notice the disclaimer on the back you might think they were in it together.

"I think what I was trying to say, and this is a major part of my platform, is that my plan to turnaround Wayne County is working with Mayor Duggan as he turns around the city of Detroit," Wild says.

"I didn't think it was appropriate and we sent him a letter asking him to stop," says Duggan.

Mayor Duggan has previously endorsed Wild's opponent on the Democratic ticket. As a prosecutor, Duggan worked closely with former Wayne County Sheriff Warren Evans and is hoping to do so gain.

Voters will have the final say during the August 5 primary.

"Obviously, the mayor can endorse who ever he thinks is appropriate but the piece, if it was misleading, that wasn't the intent," Wild says.

Fox 2 did reach out to Warren Evans's campaign. Fox 2's Robin Murdoch reports his communications director was short and sweet, simply saying Mayor Wild ran out of supporters and had to make one up.
