'Manhattanhenge' illuminates NYC

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The sunset on Friday and Saturday will be extraordinary as it will create the twice-a-year phenomenon known as 'Manhattanhenge.'

The term was coined by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson.

The spectacle occurs when the sun sets and lines itself with the street grid of Manhattan, illuminating all east -west streets at the same time.

'Manhttanhenge' occurred on Friday at 8:28 p.m. and again on Saturday at 8:27 p.m., according to the U.S. Navy's Astronomical Applications Department.

After Saturday, the setting sun will not align in the same way until next year.

It's a running joke that if you mention the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center to nearly anyone in Hollywood they're going to know exactly what you're talking about because odds are they might have gotten their first big break there. Would you believe some Hollywood's biggest stars -- Meryl Streep, Michael Douglas, Angela Bassett -- got their start in a big red barn in the middle of nowhere.
