BROWNSVILLE, Tenn. (FOX13) - History was made in Haywood County Tuesday evening after William "Bill" Rawls, Jr., was sworn in as Brownsville's first African-American mayor.

MORE: Rawls Elected First Black Mayor of Brownsville

Mayor Rawls defeated incumbent mayor Jo Matherene during the June 17 election. Matherene also made Brownsville history. She was the first female to hold the same position.

Mayor Rawls won in a landslide with 65-percent of the vote. He says in his first 30 days of office his focus will be cleaning up trash and debris in the community.
