Chief: 'Cop on every corner' won't stop Minneapolis violence

Posted: Updated:

Minneapolis Police Chief Janee Harteau said a surge of violence in the city is not just a police issue, but also a community issue. That’s something people on the north side agree with, after 3 shootings left 2 people dead over the weekend.

Patrice Love lives next door to 24-year-old Francesca DeSandre, who was shot and killed outside of her home just hours after the 4th of July fireworks ended. Fran always referred to Patrice as Momma Love.

“I've never seen nothing like this in my life,” Love said. “You know, like a wild animal, execution-style. I loved her like she was my daughter, and my husband felt the same way.”

Just 2 miles away, another family was grieving the death of a girl shot and killed hours before Fran's murder. The north side has now seen 11 of the 16 murders in Minneapolis this year.

This weekend, Chief Harteau told the city to “put down your guns.”

“That's not enough,” Love said. “You know they're not going to do that. You know people aren’t going to willingly put down their guns.”

Of course not,” Harteau admitted. “But I should ask, right? I think everybody should ask.”

The chief said they've put more officers in the violent areas of north Minneapolis, which has led to more gun seizures. Harteau said the MPD knows where the crimes are going to happen, just not when.

“We're tapping into every imaginable resource we can,” Harteau said. “This is something that is not going to stop even if I have a cop on every corner.”

It was a violent weekend not only in Minneapolis, but across the Midwest. In Chicago, 9 people were killed and up to 60 were injured by violence on the 4th of July weekend.
