Valley teen is a two-time boxing champion

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (KSAZ) - There is a very special two-time boxing champion here in the valley. He's only 16 years-old and already making some big moves.

A daily task is the only piece of equipment he needs.

"We were raised rough playing with my cousins and stuff, and we always liked to watch boxing when we were little, so we just grew up with it," said Fernando Martinez.

Now as a teenager, Fernando Martinez, is a two-time national champion and is just getting started. He's won big titles, and now he's working to become a professional boxer.

"In Nevada he won the world," said his coach Chuy Fuentes.

"When we fought for the world championships he fought three times, three days in a row, 9 rounds. He didn't lose a single round," said Juan Mendoza.

"We have a big family, so we have a big squad who comes to my fights; it motivates me," said Fernando Martinez.

"Smart, intelligent, he knows what he's doing in the ring, and he listens real good to instructions, and what we tell him to do," said Mendoza.

Martinez says he has plans to one day go pro.
