CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A new form of birth control in the design of a microchip planted underneath your skin will be available for purchase in the near future.

A company in Massachusetts called MicroCHIPS has designed the product and it will enter pre-clinical trials next year. The chip is 20 x 20 x 7 millimeters in size and is made to last up to 16 years, according to a report by CNET.

To prevent women from getting pregnant, the chip will deliver a daily dose of 30 mg of levonorgestrel, which is used in most women’s contraceptives.

If a couple is trying to conceive, though, the woman can use a remote to turn the chip off, ultimately improving the chances of getting pregnant. Women can then reactivate the micropchip to protect themselves again whenever they want.

The chips have been tested on post-menopausal women succesfully, delivering osteoporosis medication over a one-month period just to make sure the product functions efficiently with no negative repercussions.

The procedure to implant the chip takes about 30 minutes.

Two years ago, Nicole Pagliaro of Staten Island dropped off her wedding gown to be cleaned and preserved at a local dry cleaner when superstorm Sandy hit. The store was destroyed and Pagliaro assumed so had been her dress.  As her wedding anniversary approached, Pagliaro and her husband drove by another dry cleaner in town and saw the gown in the store's window. “I held on to the ticket because this was my only connection to my wedding dress,” said Pagliaro.
