PHOENIX (KSAZ) - A 3-year-old boy was hospitalized on Sunday night after nearly drowning in a backyard pool.

Paramedics believe the boy was under water for about two minutes.

By the time firefighters got the call and arrived at the home near 24th Street and the Carefree Highway, family members had already pulled the toddler out of the backyard pool and performed CPR on him.

He was flown to Phoenix Children's Hospital.

The boy was visiting family at the home.

First responders breathed a sigh of relief that the boy did not become the latest valley drowning statistic.

According to Children's Safety Zone, in the last six months alone there have been 28 water-related deaths in the valley; 11 of those deaths were children.

In Phoenix, there have been 36 drownings or near-drownings just this year alone. 22 of those incidents involved babies or kids.

Fire officials stress that drownings can be prevented.

"There is absolutely no substitute for adult supervision," said Dave Wilson, with the Daisy Mountain Fire Department. "Kids are sneaky, crafty even. If they're locked, kids can find way around through it or over it."

Officials have not said how the toddler in this case was able to slip into the pool without being noticed.

No one is expected to face any charges in this near-drowning.

The 3-year-old boy is expected to be alright, but he will likely stay at the hospital overnight.

The fear now is secondary drowning, which can happen hours or even days later and can be deadly.

Doctors will watch the boy to make sure the water didn't damage his lungs.
