PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Independence Day, a perfect time to celebrate the men and women who fought for our freedom.

A large group of employees from a local restaurant chain got together to send a special surprise to troops serving overseas.

"Thank you for coming today, community strong is one of our core values," said Justin Mictrotto.

For two hours on the Fourth of July holiday more than 90 people, community members from Cane's volunteered their time to say thank you.

"They're coming here because they wanted to give back to our military on this 4th of July," said Erin Krivanek.

The event was sponsored by the non-profit group, Packages from Home. The supplies packed into the box include lotion, kleenex, toothbrushes, toothpaste, all purchased by Raising Canes.

"We love the military, we understand how much they give, and in terms of giving us our freedoms by fighting for our country and helping out the world," said Jason Zwerin.

The necessities will serve a purpose and help the troops get by. But the letters of support and of gratitude written today were carefully placed into each package. Each will deliver a piece of home equally if not more important than anything else.

"Our military needs our support, these care packages give them a little bit of home, it reminds them they haven't been forgotten while they were deployed overseas," said Zwerin.

More than 150 packages were assembled during the Raising Canes packing party. It's a 4th of July celebration that will no doubt spread patriotism far and wide.
