Peachtree runner 'unstoppable' after losing 130 pounds

Posted: Updated:

At 44, Tina Tait feels like she's just warming up for her new life. Nothing about her is half-way. She's all-in. She says, "I suddenly feel like I am an athlete. I never thought I could say that, but I am, and it feels great."

To understand why this feels good, you need to see how far Tina has come.

On her blog "Fat Girl Dives In," she tells her story in photos.

How she walked her first Peachtree Road Race two years ago, five feet tall, nearly 250 pounds.

How the harder she tried to lose weight, the more it found her.

Tait says, “My father died when he was 47 and he fought his weight his whole life. And I felt like the up and down is just really not good for you. I would lose 40 gain 60. I would lose 20 gain 60. Once I lost 100, and I gained 150!”

She walked a Breast Cancer 3-day - 60 miles - and came home 8 pounds heavier. “And that was the last straw,” Tate says, “That was it, I was done."

In January of 2013, Tait underwent a weight loss procedure called a vertical sleeve gastrectomy at Piedmont Hospital. She says, “They just remove the largest part of your stomach, which is the stretchiest (sic) part. And they leave you with a stomach that's about the size of a banana."

But the surgery wasn't the hard part. The exercise was. Tait explains, "If you're going to keep it off, you're going to have to completely change your life. And that's exactly what I did."

She began walking, then running, using the Couch to 5K program. And she kept at it, dropping 130 pounds in about 18 months.

Looking back now, she says, “Sometimes I wish this would've happened to me in my thirties. But the surgery wasn't around in my thirties."

She now runs 6 miles a day. Hills that used to be a major obstacle are now invigorating. She says, “And when I fly up that hill there is just something that makes it all worth it. Eating is not as fun as running!”

And Tina Tait - who spent 40 years dreaming of being strong, is strong. She says, “I feel like I’m unstoppable!"
