Group rescues dogs abandoned at Glendale home

Posted: Updated:
GLENDALE, Ariz. - The founder of the Fetch Foundation, a non-profit no-kill dog rescue, spotted two dogs abandoned in the backyard of a Glendale home after a house fire last Sunday.

On Tuesday, volunteers rescued both pups.

"I love my dogs.."

Sandra Catalan gave her terrier-boxer mix Nala tearful kisses -- the 1-year-old pup was seen in the back of a SUV with a volunteer from the Fetch Foundation.

"Everyday, I bring them water, food.. everyday, three times a day," she said.

Catalan left the dogs in the backyard of her Glendale home after it burned over a week ago.  She says she has four kids -- an autistic son and cannot care for the animals.

"Yeah, I would put them with me whenever I was with nothing.. and my dogs would be fine," said Melody Glover, who was feeding the dogs.

Neighbors like Glover, along with firefighters stationed down the street, have been feeding the dogs and giving them water -- hopeful someone would come to their rescue.

Nala was coaxed out first with treats.  Zoe, a hound mix, was terribly frightened and cowering.  She finally emerged after Catalan showed up.

"We're going to close the door and you're going to love them through the window," said a rescuer to Catalan.

The pups will both be taken to the Arizona Animal Welfare League, where they'll both be checked out and eventually put up for adoption.

"Not abandoning them in a house fire.. no, that's not common," said Gail Buch of the Fetch Foundation.

The group describes the situation as difficult, but as painful as giving up her dogs was for Catalan, the foundation agrees she is doing the right thing.

"Someone tried to tell me I'm a bad person and I'm not," said Catalan.

Any donations to help feed the pups can be made to the Arizona Animal Welfare League.

There's no date yet as to when the dogs will be available for adoption.
