Detroit City Councilman apologizes for 'the distraction'

DETROIT (WJBK) -  Detroit City Councilman Scott Benson stands accused of driving while impaired.

Monday the 44-year-old left Southfield police lockup with his attorney posting $500 bond. Benson was discovered Sunday night passed out and slumped over the wheel of his city-issued black 2008 Crown Victoria. That car was towed and Benson was arrested.

Tuesday afternoon it was business as usual for City Council members as they continued on without Benson.

"As a colleague, as a person who represents the city of Detroit, I want member Benson to be healthy and whole, I want him to be okay and I want all of us to be able to move forward without any distractions," says Councilmember Saunteel Jenkins.

Benson released a statement Monday night saying: "I apologize to my constituents and colleagues for the distraction, and I look forward to continuing my work to move Detroit in a positive direction."

His attorney tells Fox 2 Tuesday more decisions will be made within the next few days, and calls the allegations "disturbing."

When Benson will be back to work is not known at this time. Jenkins says disciplinary action isn't even being thought of until formal charges are brought. Michigan State Police say those blood test results could take up to 30 days.

In the meantime, how will Benson's absence affect the city?

"There are nine Council members. We need a majority, [which] is five. As long as there are five Council members here we can make any decisions. ... Ideally, we want all nine people who were elected to be at the table serving," says Jenkins.
