PHOENIX (KSAZ) - A crash involving an armored car sent five people to the hospital and shut down a busy road all morning.

It's amazing that everyone involved survived. The accident resulted in the closure of 51st Avenue & Dobbins. It was also a tough job for firefighters who had to bring in 3 ladder truck companies to get everyone out of their vehicles.

The armored car crossed right in front of an oncoming truck carrying a father, his two teenage kids, and a dog.

Police say the driver of an armored car may have been or was about to use his cell phone when the accident happened.

"When he looked up there was vehicle traffic that was stopped in the roadway, and that caused him to take evasive action, ultimately leading to him losing control of the vehicle," said Sgt. Trent Crump.

The two employees inside the armored car should be ok, one of them was able to pull himself out of the driver's side door. Firefighters say it was not easy getting everyone else out of the vehicles.

"They indicated they had to open up the entire truck. As far as the fire truck they pulled out all their tools and equipment... fortunately they were able to cut everybody out of the car, get them out of there, and transport them to the hospital," said Ruben Saavedra with Phoenix Fire.

The man who was driving a pick-up truck suffered the worst injuries. Police say he's in critical condition but is expected to survive.

His 17 and 14 year-old children have non-life threatening injuries. Their chocolate lab was taken from the scene by the Arizona Humane Society.

Authorities say that most of the money stayed inside the armored car. Only a small amount of rolled coins made it onto the street.

Both employees inside the armored car also were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. It is not clear whether investigators will cite the driver of the armored car.
