Southwest Philadelphia Residents Want Answers After Gas Outage

Posted: Updated:
SOUTHWEST PHILADELPHIA -

Residents in a Southwest Philadelphia neighborhood are getting one bad break after another. First a water main break, then their gas is shut off for two days. Tonight, they want answers from PGW.

“We expect to hear 2 or 3 clicks and then the gas turns on. But we're not getting anything," said resident Demetrius Cogdell.

Cogdell is among a thousand residents and business owners who have been without gas since Saturday night.

“Thank God, it's not February, and it's June,” said Cogdell.

PGW says the gas had to be cut after a water main broke on Saturday at 56th Street and Woodland Avenue. The company says water got into gas lines and has to be removed. So far, workers have taken out up to 40,000 gallons. The outage reaches as many as 10 city blocks.

"Our restaurant is closed. 20-25 employees sitting home,” said Popeye’s owner Syed Shah. “Customers coming and leaving; there is a big problem, and PGW is trying but they can’t find the solution."

Local business owners like Shah tell Fox 29 they're losing tens of thousands of dollars waiting for the gas to be turned back on. They've had to send workers home and cancel shifts.

PGW says it hopes gas will be restored in the next day or so. The company says it's responding as quickly as it can, but some customers may have to pay for repairs if the water came through the gas line and damaged their appliances. And that upsets residents.

“Get on the case, treat people fairly, we're good citizens we pay our bills. Treat people fairly,” said Cogdell.

In a statement the water department said, "Homeowners with property damage can put a claim into the city to be compensated.”
