Mich. man with 100 lb. scrotum raising funds for life-changing surgery

Posted: Updated:
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (FOX 17) -- A Michigan man is making a plea to the public to help him raise money for a life-changing surgery, FOX 17 in West Michigan reports.

He suffers from a rare disease called scrotal lymphedema, a condition that has caused his scrotum to grow unusually large and weighing 100 pounds.

Five years ago, Dan Maurer's life was on track. He was in the middle of getting his weight under control, losing 50 pounds, when his mother says he had a setback.

"He noticed that his groin was starting to grown and, at that time, it was about the size of a cantaloupe," Maurer's mother says.

A visit to a Michigan doctor turned up little in terms of results, "because they really hadn't told him what they were dealing with," she says.

As time passed, his condition worsened.

"The bigger it gets it seems to me like the faster it grows. When he stands it almost hangs to his ankles," his mother says.

Through his own research, Maurer found a doctor who specializes in the surgery he says is required.

"We've set an appointment to go see Dr. Gelman in California at the end of July," Maurer says.

The only problem?

The doctor is out of network from his insurance.

"We know the first trip out is going to be four thousand [dollars]," says his mother.

At the time this report was published, Maurer has raised about $1,500 towards his $20,000 goal.
