Family fighting to stop city from putting dog down

Posted: Updated:
HAZEL PARK, Mich. (WJBK) -  A Hazel Park family is making a tearful plea to the city to keep their dog from being put down. Their beloved dog was taken away after an incident with a neighbor's smaller dog.

"She helps me when i'm upset and angry. She is, she means the world to me. I would give my life for that dog," says 12-year-old Nathan Gilbert.

But it may be the dog who gives her life.

Sasha, a 2-year-old Alaskan Malamute is in hot water with the city of Hazel Park, quarantined in a Pontiac shelter until her owner faces a judge later this week.

Sasha broke free and bit another dog May 18th. Now, a judge will decide her fate.

"The order says that we have to go to court to prove reason why our dog should not be put down or listed as a dangerous dog. She belongs to my autistic son, so this has been very hard for him to be without her, and right now Sasha Bear is currently pregnant with a litter of puppies and she's due a week after the court date," says Rachelle Gilbert.

"I have had real trouble sleeping at night without her and I just miss her because every day I wake up and her bed is in the the kitchen. Every day I wake up and I see that empty space and it makes me sadder every day," says Nathan.

Sweetie, a 2-year-old shih tzu, is almost back to her old self. She had 10 stitches and a draining tube after the attack. The vet bill was upwards of $700, money the owner says she agreed to pay but Sweetie's owner tells a different story.

"Since we've been subpoenaed to go she's been calling me asking how the dog is and wants to make arrangements for payment, but nothing before then," says June Dockery.

She says she only wanted to see the dog muzzled and the owner's fence reinforced so Sasha couldn't get out. She says it was the city attorney who pursued the case, even though Sasha doesn't have a history of violence.

"I showed her what few pictures I had with me, and her comment right there and then was, 'It's out your hands. We will handle and we're going to court,'" Dockery says.

"I just pray to God don't -- don't kill my dog," says Nathan.

Fox 2's Maurielle Lue spoke with Hazel Park city attorney off-camera and she reports she was told Sasha's owners are irresponsible for failing to initiate payment, and even though is Sasha's first offense the attorney says this should be treated like a first offense for assault or even attempted murder.

A judge will hear this case Wednesday morning.
