Arkansas' environmental and utility regulators are planning to speak with electricity producers and community leaders about proposed federal regulations designed to reduce the nation's carbon emissions.

The Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality and the Public Service Commission are to hold a meeting Wednesday to discuss the proposal with businesses, utilities and others about the state's goal of cutting emissions by nearly 45 percent by 2030.

The regulations are significant, in part, because it's the first time carbon pollution from existing power plants will come under the restrictions. Arkansas gets about half its electricity from coal-fired power plants.

President Barack Obama announced earlier this month a goal of cutting carbon emissions nationwide by 30 percent by 2030.
