Memphis Councilman Edmund Ford, Jr., said he will present a resolution at the next council meeting about a plan to create an insurance safety net for city retirees in the wake of the budget passage.

The resolution would set up a $1 million fund to help retirees who can't find affordable insurance. The money would come from savings from the city's insurance provider Cigna. It won't impact the city's budget, the councilman said.

"In order to make sure that we can ensure some type of access to health insurance for those who used to work for the city of Memphis I think that it's important that we have a safety net in place," Councilman Ford said.

The city administration will also help retirees address the changes to their health care coverage and assist them finding other alternatives.
