11 suspicious fires on same Detroit street within hours

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - Detroit police are on the hunt for one or more arsonists after 11 suspicious fires happened on one street Friday morning.

Two different sets of fires raged on the north end and south end of Garland Street early Friday morning. It was a wall of flames, as you can see in photos from The Detroit Free Press.

In all, arson investigators tell us fires burned 11 unoccupied homes and they're looking for whoever's responsible.

"These houses was [sic] just up last night, yesterday. Now you wake up the whole block is burnt down. Who's going to want to move in these neighborhoods?" asks John Kiner.

He lives near these homes on the 4500 block that were burned to the ground.

We're told one man was arrested suspected of setting his neighbor's car on fire, and that suspect's house is one of the structures that went up in flames.

Investigators believe one set of fires may be the result of that dispute and the other set may be drug related. All were equally dangerous.

The heat from one of the fires was so intense you can see where the siding buckled on a house across the street.

"Look at my siding in front. So, that tells you what's going on right there. Whoever's setting these fires, they [are] setting some harsh fires. All these houses that done [sic] caught on fire, the fire department, by the time they get here, they ain't [sic] able to really put them out. They just gone," says Kiner.

On the 5000 block of Garland we saw police towing a stripped and stolen Mercedes and two unopened commercial safes found in the garage of one burned home.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported in all of this but plenty of damage was, and now more dangerous, burned-out eyesores are on neighborhood streets.
