Since October, more than 47 thousand immigrant kids crossed the border, and they were by themselves according to U.S. leaders.

That’s nearly double the total of the previous 12 months.

A chance at the American dream propels thousands of Central American migrants to the U.S.

Many families are risking their lives traveling through Mexico to the U.S. border atop fast-moving trains.

Cecilia says, "We also know about the risk there is traveling like this.  However, in my country children are also in great danger due to the high crime rates."

Others have opted to send just their children, and thanks in part to a 2012 White House policy known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals.

It allows some illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as children to defer deportation.

Franklin says, "What I want is to progress and be someone of greater significance."

With thousands of unaccompanied minors now in the U.S., the Obama administration is scrambling to find a place to keep them all.

Joe Biden says, "We're working to bring about change for 1 million undocumented women, men and children, and to bring them out of the shadows of American life and give them the dignity that they deserve."

The lone star state is bearing the brunt of housing a majority of the immigrants at now overcrowded shelters.

The situation has created a massive humanitarian crisis.

Texas Governor Rick Perry says something more must be done.

Perry says, "Now we had an absolute humanitarian catastrophe on our hands, as well as a homeland security issue. The fed must step in and do their part and uphold their constitutional duty to secure that boarder."
